The day I got Yellow Fever

As many of you know, I am preparing for my teaching adventure.  I am leaving out of Omaha on May 30th, and will be back Aug 3rd.  I will be teaching in a school in Kampala, UG. I have known about the school for many years, thanks to Fr. Michael (a priest I have known since the mid 90's from the church I grew up in).   Paula, a friend of my brother's, made this documentary about her experience. http://www.frmichaelschildren.com/
It is highly suggested, as well as in some cases mandatory, that vaccines/medications are taken before/during traveling abroad.  Last Friday was my first set of shots.  I needed the yellow fever vaccine to be able to get my visa to get into the country.  Well... it says directly on the precautions "do not get if allergic to chicken proteins."  Ding, ding, ding! That's me!  Or at least some part of chicken.  I told my doctor, who also happens to be the wife of my principal, that I may have an allergic reaction.  She responded casually, "Well, you need the shot to get into the country, so it looks like you may be in some pain." Ok, I can handle this. I got the shot, it swelled a little, and there was an oval circle around the area, but nothing to be too worried about.
I got to my brother and sister-in-law's house to stay for the weekend and was feeling pretty alright.  I could tell I was slightly allergic to the shot, as my chest felt a little tight, but still nothing too horrible since I had already prepared myself that something would happen.  Around 9:00 p.m. I got a little sleepy and decided I should shower and go to bed.  Around 1:30 a.m. I woke up with the worst headache of my life.  I thought maybe little parts of my brain were exploding.  I stumbled into the bathroom feeling nauseous from the head pounding.  I frantically dig through the drawer looking for medicine to make the feeling of death knocking at my head go away.  Sadly, all I could find were two bottles of children's tylenol.  I looked at the label and saw if I weighed 76 lbs I should take 6. I poured a hand full, crunched on the horrible grapeness of them, and went back to bed.  I awoke feeling brand new!
The next day in church I almost fainted.  I felt as though I was sleep walking with a fever the next couple of days, then slowly, after much sleep, I am alive again!
I also got my Hep A shot that Friday for those of you who are keeping track.
